Last Friday
Okay, so Friday, March 24th. Frank had to get out of the apartment because, well, just because. And he doesn't have a car, so he IMs me. Going out with band people for a birthday thing, wanna go? Uh, band people that I don't really know, uh, no thanks. So I told him just that, and I ended up going out to dinner, Ben's, then hosted more drinking at the condo. Yeah, when I put my foot down, by gosh, I mean it. Seriously though, I had so much fun. Chili's was a little awkward with "the new Webb", but he left when he got carded at Ben's. It was cool catching up with Jeremy and Cory, and even cool hanging out with Frank. I don't remember the last time I hung out with him without Jason, but it was totally cool. He even said two funny things that evening! Way to go, Frank. People started leaving around 3am. Watching movies the rest of the night, one of my favorite things to do! I have said cool too many times, for lack of a better word. Okay, I had fun. And Ben's, totally didn't suck on a Saturday night. Not like last time when I went with Jacque and Austen and Mike and Mike's friend and Kristen. We were like, the only people in the bar. Awkward. Anyway, pretty freaking sweet.

Adventures in the West
I can't even explain how I was not looking forward to Karen's wedding. First, because I was only invited because Ann could bring a date, and she wasn't going to take Eric to a camp wedding. That would probably be torture for him... So I said I would go, thinking that she was my CIT Director and I adore her, even if she did go to work for Camp Carter. Second, I didn't know what to wear or who would be there - I hadn't been to a wedding since I was in junior high. I don't dress appropriately for special occasions. I usually miss the mark on attire by about 3 inches. Off just enough to notice, but hard to put your finger on why that skirt, jacket, and shoe trio just do not work. And then two days before the wedding I told Lydia that I would work at camp on Saturday, the day of the wedding. My mental math told me that I would have plenty of time to drive back from Granbury, take a shower, get all dressed up, and then to the church in Ft. Worth by way of Ann's parents' house. I was never good at math.
Friday was the night I was going to take Ann to Vino's, this hideous bar on Pipeline in Bedford. Jacque mentioned going to a haunted house that night as well and that was sure to be good fun, so I told her we would head that way too. Oh glorious times. Long wait. Slight drizzle. The haunted house wasn't as good as last year's and we didn't even go through the bubble room at the end. Boo! But I got to see Jacque and Austen and Mike. Yay!
Then Ann and I hauled to Bedford for the karaoke. Ann's parents live off of Pipeline and she drove by Vino's every day on the way to Nolan for school. She said she had always wanted to go there, because it was the one place on the street she couldn't go into. When I mentioned that I met a friend there once, for like a second, we decided to make it out goal to go there when she would be in town. Well, victory is ours! Except the prize is Vino's. It looks like this tiny little hick bar, but with karaoke. You know the place, next to Little Cesar's. Pizza! Pizza!
I didn't mention this before, but I happened to put on my going out make-up this evening, complete with three shades of eye shadow, eye liner, black mascara, and bright lipstick. I am nothing if not looking like a harlot this evening. The look is finished with my tight jeans, a white wife beater and a pink sweatshirt popular the world over after Flashdance. That's correct, it was off the shoulder. The waitress re-named us Leslie and Mary, because the two loud guys at the next table were very "friendly" and we should avoid real names just to be on the safe side. I was Leslie. The boys came by, said hi a few times. After we sat down one guy goes, who's the blonde? Ann goes, "You know why they keep coming over?" I have to answer, "Of course, because I'm dressed like a white trash slut with big hair and acid-washed jeans." Will think twice before playing the slut outside of the gay-borhood.
We sang the karaoke. The rest was relatively uneventful, except when we wanted to leave, the waitress disappeared for 30 minutes and we had to wait for her to get my credit card back, but I suppose that is neither here nor there. It was like a prison with cruel karaoke torture! Thankfully I decided to stay in Bedford at the parental units' place. Got up at the butt-crack to make it there, but they put a drive-thru Starbucks in at 377 and 20. Glorious! Tried desperately to look like I knew what I was doing with the fishing and the poles. There was bait, too. As you can imagine, that didn't go well at all. Stinky catfish bait, bright red fish eggs. Fall Creek, not exactly known for the fishing in our parts of the water. Fairly dry and, as I found out half way through the day, frequented by large venomous snakes. Woot! Didn't see any though. Heh. They only visit me in the bathroom in Discovery Lodge. Ahem.
I asked Lydia if I could leave early and I went to Old Navy to get a cheap cardigan to go with my outfit, then went over to Bed, Bath, & Beyond to purchase a gift for the newly weds. I walk in the door and hear my name being called. Sounds like Ann, but I don't see her, so I begin spinning in the entry way of the Triple B. Then I see her. Of course she is here. Purchasing our gift with her mom. I love Ann. So the gift is picked out, we decide to grab a bag and tissue paper between the wedding and the reception. Off to Bedford for both of us to get ready. I shower the camp off and get dressed with a presentable amount of hair styling and make-up. In fact, I don't think I look half bad. How is this possible? Am loving this day. Get to Ann's on time and dressed with the exception of my new cardigan which is still wet from the dryer. Who knew clothes dried faster if you put more than one item of clothing in there? Well, shut up, I didn't.
We made it to the church on time, fabulousness. As I got out of the car I remembered, far too late, that you could see straight through my skirt in direct sunlight and the sun had not yet set. Awkward!! We walked to the church quickly, my head held high. Can't tell if they're staring at me if I'm not looking at them. We were in the back of the church, so we were like, the first people Karen saw when she started walking down the aisle. Later she said, "I was so glad to see Ann's date was Devon." Haha. It's a committed relationship, if not always understood. The wedding was beautiful. Karen's brother cried. Sean probably won't cry at my wedding. Or my union ceremony with Ann, which ever comes first. After the wedding we stood out on the steps for a minute, I'm not sure who we were waiting for. But I noticed a girl that I recognized. Her husband was talking to one of the people that had been sitting in front of us in the church. "Don't I know you?" I asked. "Jacque's friend?" she responded. I was confused and felt as if I shouldn't like her. In fact I was quite sure I was not supposed to like her, so I stared awkwardly at the floor and walked across the street. Later I mentioned it to Jacque and she was like, "Yeah, that's so-and-so. We don't like her anymore, so you were right." Woot! Am becoming master of the social snub. We drove across the street to the CVS without too much car parking drama, just the right amount (because I am indecisive spastic driver in Ft.Worth). We got a bag and paper and began wrapping her gift when we realized that all of the wedding guests could probably see us wrapping this gift as they drove away from the church. I am nothing if not the least bit tacky. But only on occasion.
The reception was at the Stockyards. Delightful, fun, cobbled streets are not friendly to high heeled shoes. That is all I will say. Mediocre DJ, we waited an hour and a half for food, but there was an open bar. That screams a good party. Saw all kinds of camp people. I had so much fun! Toni began talking about camp and unfortunately Ann forced me to spill a well guarded secret about my extra-curricular activities during one of our 20s off from camp. Am still embarrassed and feel very awkward. But it is good to know that the crap of the summer is still bothering people besides myself. On the way home Ann and I discussed things we could do to make camp better and I felt very proactive.
After I dropped her off, I began thinking about the wedding and camp and CITS. Of the huge group that I was in, four of us were at Karen's wedding. It made me unbelievably giddy to see two people, one of whom I care a lot about, so very happy together. It was heart-warming. I wonder if any of my CITs will be dancing at my wedding?
P.S. Ann and I wrote our own message on the inside of a blank card. We gave her an ice bucket and the message went something like this. "Karen- For all of our hot nights together. We wish you all the best. Love, Ann and Devon." Nothing if not the least bit tacky.

Labor Day Weekend.
If I recall correctly, Friday night of the Labor Day weekend, I fell asleep as soon as I got home from school. I woke up when Austen called to see if I was interested in driving to Fort Worth. Mike wanted to head out around 9:00pm and it was about 7:35pm when he called, which gave me a little under and hour to wake up, get myself together, and leave for Fort Worth. But I said, oh yeah, I can be there by 8:30pm. No problem. Except I desperately needed a shower and I was sick of going out with Jacque and Austen and Mike and always looking like shit and being tired. If I'm going to look that exhausted I want to be clean, and have make-up on. Of course. Made it there a little after 9:00pm. Jacque and Austen were making junk food for dinner. Mmm...dinner. Jacque was surfing My Space and Facebook. Yes, on a Friday night, what the hell else are you going to be doing? I watched that Hulk Hogan reality show until we were ready to go. Oh my gosh, it's better than The Osbourne's. So we went to 8.0 in downtown Ft. Worth and listened to really loud, but good, salsa. They played other stuff, but all I can remember is "Conga". So therefore, it is a salsa band. "Ironic" by Alanis Morrisette could have been the last song they played for all I remember. But we ended up at another bar, I don't remember which one, but it was pretty interesting. By this time I was quite tired. Went home. Slept. Woke up, went to the Baylor game. More fun than sliced bread. Or whatever. It was fun to see all those alumni. Sunday morning Sean and I drove up to Tulsa after picking up Brian in Norman. Not too ridiculous. We ate a lot, because that's barely the only thing we can do without too much conflict. Now I say barely because Steve and Erin were fighting all throughout dinner at PF Chang's. About a blazer. I don't want to talk about it. Erin, Sean, Brian, and I got to stay at the Double Tree and they have the best beds EVER! Ohhhh...I could live in those beds. We saw "An Unfinished Life". Very good. Then we came home. And I went to IKEA with Ann. Good times. Bought a wok. Don't judge me. Okay, so I haven't opened it yet. Bite me.

Mmm...weekends.
I love the Sunday. There is nothing like Beverly Hills Cop and greasy Chinese food. Mmm... Yesterday was more productive than any day in the last week. I slept a really freaking long time, started laundry, and took a shower with a candle that smells like soap. Why? Why would I use the candle that smells like soap? I haven't used it in the last year....but I needed it because the water in University Park still smelled a little bit like moldy @$$. Such as life. Went over to Jacque's ... Mike and I watched "Scream 3" (my choice) while Jacque and Austen grilled chicken and corn. Oh and Jacque made rice. Mmm...rice. There really is nothing better than rice. I would like to know what the deal is with gummy worms. I don't get the appeal. Whatever...we went to the Cowboys/Texans game. Not really interesting until near the end where the Cowboys were winning 14 to 3 and half of the stadium had started to empty out when the Texans came back and ran an incredible amount of yards to a touchdown. Woot. Not that I'm a Texans fan. But then in the last quarter Cowboys made another touchdown, so they won 21 to 9. But oh, so many mistakes...it's going to be a long season. Good luck Cowboys. I have decided to re-embrace the title of this blog, "So I have to journal..." The children have started writing essays...so I will now begin updating every day. Okay, you know I'm lying. But I will try harder to update more.
Okay, so we get back after the game and Austen is all excited and wired, I don't know, but he wants to go out. Mike has already gone to his Business School party in Fort Worth and so the three of us head toward Greenville. I suggested the Green Elephant and we were on our way and I was like, I'm not sure what street it is on, because it moved and Jacque goes you know what street it's on you've been there and I thought she was crazy and I go, I guess we can go to the Barley House, because I haven't been there. And she goes, yeah, the old Green Elephant and I'm like, whaaa? She wanted the old Green Elephant, the Barley House, and I was looking for the new Green Elephant and I was tired and so confused. But we made it to the Barley House AND found a parking spot so we went in and had a few drinks. This really great band was playing, maybe Chris Holt, we aren't sure if that's the lead singer or the band or if the waiter was just giving Austen his name... Anyway, so that was a pretty good time. But I seriously can't stay up that late any more. It's killing me. I'm becoming such a school marm. Yeesh.
Oh, hey, if you noticed in the Dallas Morning News an article about a cafeteria worker who viciously ripped a hot lunch tray from a kindergartener and throwing it away in exchange for cheese and crackers because they hadn't been approved for free meals yet ... yeah, that was about my school. Yeesh. It didn't happen exactly the way the incident was portrayed in the paper, but it did happen. Good grief!

So this past weekend...
Friday at noon-thirty Jacque called to tell me that she was on her way to pick me up. I was still trying to find everything that I could possibly need for the next thirty hours so that I could stuff it into an incredibly tiny bag. Blazer, dress shirt, khakis ... shampoo, toothbrush, hairdryer. I'm rushing around trying to find everything before she gets here and I still need to put my make-up on. We're meeting Jason Axe and Brian O'Neill in Huntsville, at Sam Houston State, not the prison, to take pictures at the graduation. We arrived at the crappiest Motel 6 I've ever seen and there were two rooms left. Jacque thought that her boss would have one room and we would get the other, because the hotel was packed and we couldn't get another room. So that meant that the four of us would have to share this tiny room with two tiny beds. It did not bode well for us. Brian bitched and moaned, but Jacque eventually found out that her boss wasn't staying the night and the second room belonged to Brian and Jason. Unfortunately it smelled like urine, or so they said, Jacque and I never smelled anything... But anyway, we did the graduation, then we went out to Chili's. Mmm. Quesadillas and a margarita. Sleep, 2nd graduation at the butt-crack of dawn, then the third and the day was over. I was exhausted, those cameras were heavy! And I have the upper arm strength of a four year old. But we drove home, I had enough time to check the mail and then went over to Jacque's for grilling.
Mike and Austen and I were having an enjoyable evening and I decided to call Kim and congratulate her on her graduation ... and to see what she was doing. Jacque wanted to see "Monster-in-Law" but the rest of us were thinking, anything else but that. So Kim was all, well, Spaz and Luke and Jason Hicks and Daniel Powell and her were going to meet somewhere I was like, well, bringing them to Jacque's would be a horrible idea and to call me back when they knew where they were going. Then Jacque insisted I call Kim back and tell her to bring them over. So I did and they were going to come by after a while. So while we watched "Top Gun" and ate dinner, I went at the task to get shit-faced. Inappropriate beverages dull the senses and I can't take Luke and Ryan sober. Well I totally succeeded. I believe that I was biting Austen's arm as we were fighting for the honor of Jacque's Rainbow Brite doll when the group arrived. Shit-faced I was. It was fairly uneventful, I was polite, I think. I don't think I said anything rude. Spilled shitty Long Island Iced Tea all over myself. At one point Ryan snatched Luke's Season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that I TOLD HIM he forfeited to us when he refused to talk to us for a year. But Ryan grabbed and was like "sshhhh" and I was so drunk, I did sshhhh. Oh well. Kim still has the flask as far as I know. They left eventually. We tried to follow them to a bar, but never made it out of the apartment. And nobody was okay enough to drive. We continued to fight over the Rainbow Brite doll and eventually Jacque and Austen were "looking for Rainbow Brite" in her bedroom with the lights off, so all I did was close the door. I politely waited about 34.5 hours before I asked her what happened. Anyway, so Mike and I watched tv, fell asleep, then we all went home when Jacque and Austen finally emerged. I drove home, watched a little "Life and Death of Peter Sellers" with Sean, then went to sleep around 5:15am. I promptly woke up at 4:30pm. With a large bruise the size of a door knob on my lower back and a smaller, less ugly bruise on my left shoulder. Will never defend Jacque's doll again. Am staying out of childish fighting. For at least a week... Well, gotta go.

No Really
I think I had one of the most bizarre weekends of my adult life. I can't talk about it yet, and I'm only mentioning it here, because I know nobody reads this ... but I have to tell somebody! Someone told me a secret! It's driving me crazy. I know I'll tell one person by the end of the day, but I can't tell Jacque yet - which is killing me. And I have to have lunch with her today... Anyway... I may never party again, because I made bad choices Saturday night and I paid for it Sunday. I slept all day! Yeesh.

4 day weekend
Thursday night: Women's basketball game, they won! Holla! Then Ben's Halfyard House. Somewhat amusing.
Friday night: fell asleep around 6pm and slept through band gig. My bad. Watched movies at Jacque's.
Saturday: Women's basketball game, they won! Holla, again! Went on a grand grocery shopping adventure for like 3 hours with Jacque. Then we went to North Park in an attempt to eat at P.F. Chang's. But it was Saturday night and we didn't have a reservation. So we went to Banana Republic, did a little shopping, went to Starbucks, because it rocks and I need it like air...then we ordered P.F. Chang's To Go and watched movies at Jacque's. But only until Austen decided video games would be better than the TNT edited version of Fletch. Yes, I love Fletch... So then we played Super Mario Kart for Gamecube until 4:30am. Austen owned the balloon battle, but Jacque and I did the team racing and we kicked major butt! And this is an amazing story, because I hate video games. For the most part. Except for a long standing love of Super Mario Brothers 2 for Game Boy. Take it Wario! Take it!
Sunday: woke up at 11am...watched movies all day...went to Jason's for the Oscars. Ooo...that girl from Phantom of the Opera had on the exact same red dress as Renae Zellweger. Why did most of the women have a variation on the same two dresses? Did they all share a stylist this year? Why were both styles of dresses from the last season of Sex and the City? Seriously kids, grow some imagination, or pay to take advantage of someone else's!

This week has not been fabulous...
You know how no matter how many good things happen during the week, they can't make up for the crappy parts?
Monday I had a paper due at 11:00am. I can't even believe I finished it. That puts a sour start to the week.
I went to Razzoo's for Mardi Gras on Tuesday. It was good times. After we left Jacque and I were going to the car and this van drives along beside us, pulls past the empty space next to my car and then proceeds to back into it, so that the driver's side is facing my driver's side. We're getting into the car and the driver goes, "Can I compliment y'all?"
Not to turn down a compliment before I hear it, I turn around and give Jacque a confused look and then turned back.
The guy goes, "Who is the busty one?"
What????!!!???
Jacque goes, "yeah..."
The guy goes "what, are you a 38DD?"
He started to say something else, but at that point I decided to sit down in the car and close the door. The CREEPY GUY in the VAN decides to drive off. Geeeihh!!
Wednesday I went to work, then class, then work, then skipped class and went home. I went to Jacque's for dinner. That was nice. Watched Alias. Always a good time.
Thursday I wore my stain-resistant khakis. I had to be at work by 8:15am. Around 3pm I realized when I saw my reflection in the window of Smoothie King, that my fly was down.
The humiliation I felt was so overwhelming.
Don't people tell you these things anymore!?! But then I zipped up, went back to work and had sushi for dinner with Kim. I wandered into the game, late, and went to Ben's afterward. All in all great. Kim displayed the marvel of my stain-resistant khakis to everyone at the table, by repeatedly dropping Cosmopolitan on my pants. It was fun. And we saw lesbians singing Faith, by George Michael.
"HA!! Lesbians!" as Jason would say... :)
I have been so tired this week and the Starbucks that I have enjoyed almost every morning this week is making me crazy. Wish me a happy weekend.

mmm...another thursday night
So Thursday I decided that if Jacque and I felt better that we would go to Ben's. On Wednesday I called Jason and asked if he would be interested in going and he actually said yes! He wanted to drink a very long shiner. A half-yard, you may ask? Yes. Thursday finally came around and we didn't feel better ... I went to the game and I talked to Kim and she said she had a presentation the next morning, so she wouldn't be able to go. That meant that there would be no peer pressure to go out. I called Jacque to see what she was doing and she sounded really loopy. She was busy drinking half a bottle of wine with her friend Max. It's okay, he lives in the building next to her's and all she has to do is walk home! She asked when we were going to Ben's. She said she figured I would try to talk her into going anyway, so she was ready to go. Yay! We're going to Ben's. I call Jason and his jaw hurts, one of his many oral issues. I ask if he can open his mouth enough to drink. Of course! So off we go... Jacque was out of it before we got there and decided to dial someone. She really ought to delete that number. She goes Devon, you should really delete that number from my address book - and she pushed her phone toward me. But not really - and she yanked the phone from the table. I called Jim for the second time, on Jason's suggestion. I let the phone ring, knowing it would probably go to voice mail. I waited a moment, tried desperately to listen for the beep underneath some wailing karaoke and finally just said, "You're a PIKE?" and hung up. I'll do this a few more times before I get used to the idea that Jim Harper is a fricking frat boy. Jason drank two half yards and then a pint of Shiner. And then he puked down the side of my car. Sorry, Jason, I had to tell somebody. But hell, it's not the first time I've cleaned up puke at 1am and it won't be the last. Altogether a successful evening. And I even got up for class the next morning. Woot!

Downtown
Last night I went to the Mavericks game with Jacque, Austin, and Mike. Jacque and I planned what Mike referred to as an itinerary for the evening, so that we wouldn't run late or miss the last train or anything like that. We were supposed to meet at 5pm so we could have dinner in the West End. Jacque was running late, so they didn't get here until 5:30pm, but that was okay, because I, as usual, was late as well. We took the DART from Mockingbird Station and a few stops later we were in the West End. I started walking in the direction that my keen navigational skills told me would take us to the restaurant that we had decided to try ... Dick's Last Resort. Basically, I followed a bunch of rowdy looking people and when they stopped at Landry's I kept walking. Shhh...don't tell. This idea of going to Dick's made me a little nervous because the service there is quite sassy. And Jacque can be a little short if she doesn't get the joke. But everything was fine. Our waiter decided to pick on Austen, and he was amusingly uncomfortable with the sass directed at him.
We sat at one of the long tables on the second floor and Jacque and I ordered margaritas. Mike ordered a beer and Austen ordered a large beer. Then before the waiter came back for our order, the host seated four guys at the other end of our table. Two of them were under 21 and they had to order Cokes, so when the waiter brought out the drinks they made cokes with a large swirl of whipped cream on top with about 15 straws sticking out. He didn't want them to feel left out. Heh.
Jacque and I ordered some sort of salmon that was REALLY good and by the time our meal was over it was getting really close to game time. Jacque and I were talking when one of the guys on the end of the table started heading for the bathroom. Just as he was walking through the door, the entire table noticed that the waiter had taped a sign to his back. We were giddy to find out what the note said, but we all played it cool until the guy sat down. I slowly leaned back to look around this guy's friend who was also, casually, checking out the note on his back. It said, "My butt itches and my hand is stinky." Now, after a couple drinks, the whole table thought this was hilarious. In hindsight, it's not so much, but it was even funnier that his friends didn't tell him and it was still on his back when we left for the game.
The game was good, the Mavs won, and there was an infant in the row in front of us, he didn't cry, he didn't throw things, and we had him trained to clap his hands when we cheered, so it looked that this kid that couldn't talk yet, could appear happy when the Mavericks scored. And Austen gave the baby his clappy-noisemaker-thing so the kid proceeded to clap it and almost hit his mother in the head with it. It kept us amused for most of the second half.
When we were finished we took the bus back to the West End. Did I mention this bus had Christmas lights on the inside? It was most fun. Did you know that they sell Sky Blue at the stadium? After we got out of the game we walked around while I tried to remember where the West End Pub was, but I never found it so we road the train back to Mockingbird Station. By the time we got there we had decided to go to Fox and Hound over on Skillman near Audelia. We played the longest Shuffle board game of my entire life (read: only shuffle board game of my entire life). Short of Austen and Mike challenging us every time we told him where the puck-thing fell on the points - we said 1 point, they insisted 3, whatever - and my supreme example of Shuffle board athletic prowess by getting two puck-things right at the very edge of the board, scoring the highest points, one landing less than an inch from the other; it was a very uneventful game. That was a really bad sentence. If you need further explanation of the Shuffle board game, give me a call. We partied more and watched tv. It was most amusing. The four of us, I have decided, have the most random and interesting conversations. I like it.
Oh, and then we went home and I went to sleep.

Happy Hour!
Last night Jacque decided that Brian and Austen and whoever else they could round up were going to meet Jacque and me at her new office, admire it and then go to Happy Hour somewhere in Dallas - preferably on Greenville, because that's where I like to go! So I call Jacque today to talk about where to go and we decide that we have heard good things about the Blue Goose on Lower Greenville and that's where we'll go. Austen calls late and tells us they just finished playing football and that they have to take showers and they'll be right over. So the trip to Jacque's office is cancelled. Jacque comes over to the condo after she gets off work and we chat a little while we wait.
Brian calls us and informs us that they can't get a hold of Sachin, but they'll keep trying, so they haven't even left yet.
It's 5:30pm. They will never get here. Jacque and I decide to go to Happy Hour on our own and then they can meet us at Plucker's, the wings place that we had decided on last night. Done. So we drink at the Blue Goose for what seems like forever and they finally call.
They are stuck in traffic, duh, but will be here soon - however they want burgers. Can we go to Fudruckers?
NO! Heck no! But we come to an agreement that we can go to Joe Willy's. They think it sounds sketchy, but I reassure them that if it's good enough for the pledges, it's good enough for them! The boys get to watch football, drink beer, and eat hamburgers, and Jacque gets to drink beer and enjoy their company. I had chicken wings. But after Happy Hour, it seemed like fun.
That night we went back to Bedford in time to see Tom, our elusive friend that has very little time for us, but we love dearly anyway. On a short break from BYU we meet at midnight at Jacque's parent's house and chat for two hours. Jacque graciously lets me spend the night at her place and I hitch a ride back to Dallas with her in the morning on her way to work. When I got back to the condo I couldn't go to sleep so I read I am Charlotte Simmons, the new Tom Wolfe book.
It was over 600 pages and I am proud to say I read almost every single word. It was an interesting study of the behaviors of college students. The novel began with a brief synopsis of an experiment done on feral cats. The cats were kept in a room in individual cages. Half the cats had the amygdala, a mass of grey matter that controls emotions in higher animals, removed. An inapropriate effect of this was that the cats were turned on by things that would not sexually arouse an intact animal. Cats attempted copulation with such a frenzy, that they would begin chains of cats mounting each other. The scientist that was observing the study called a collegue in to witness this. He began opening cages so that the amygdalectomized cats might congregate on the floor. The first cat that was released immediately began humping the visitor's shoe. The scientist concluded that this was the leather in the shoe that excited the animal. At this point his assistant informed the scientist that this was one of the cats from the control group. The control cats had been watching the amygdalized cats and were so steeped in the hyper-sexually obsessed environment, that the behavior had been induced in them without the surgery. The scientist discovered that over time, a strong social or "cultural" atmosphere determined responses of perfectly normal, healthy animals. Tom Wolfe used this study to introduce a book about college students. Amusing, no? It makes total sense - and it makes the end of the book that much more interesting. You should go read it. Or hell, borrow the book from me.

Tiiiiiiiiime, is on my side. Yes, it is.
I can't believe it's been three-ish weeks since I have been online. It's madness. I will now try to update this blog with everything that has happened. But I'm going to post them with the date they occured, so as not to confuse myself. Here we go. I'll start with the weekend of December 17-19th. Jacque, Austen and I went down to Huntsville, Hunstville? I don't know, we went to some city south of here to take pictures at a graduation. Jacque gets called by Flash Photography in Ft. Worth, where she used to work all the time, when they need extra help and Jacque calls us. So off we went. We left Friday evening and drove down there. We got there late and checked into our motel room. I can't really say a lot about the motel. The trip down was good - I had shotgun, Austen slept in the back. We didn't talk as much as we did on the last road trip as I recall, but we listened to a more diverse selection of music. A little Dixie Chicks, a little Metalica, the Top Gun Soundtrack. Lovely.
We got up at the butt-crack of dawn and worked two ceremonies. Jacque and I took pictures and Austen filmed the ceremony. It was very high paced and kind of stressful, because Jacque's boss was there and he is very particular. That's never good. We finished around 4:30pm. Part of the deal to get Austen to come with us for this weekend of fun was that we go to College Station Saturday night for his friend's party. It wasn't enough to get paid, he wanted a party too. Anyway, so we headed on over. I don't remember anyone's name, but it was one interesting party.
The guy that lived in the apartment we stayed at had a two bedroom by himself, so Jacque and I claimed the guest bedroom and Austen got the couch. His friends cooked burgers, Jacque and I made queso and we drank. There was one guy that was from Canadia and he entertained Jacque and me with his travel tales. Then this other guy came over and they played this game where they used beer bottle tops to try and knock bottle tops off of bottles. As the inappropriate beverages flowed, they began doing shtick. They were talking about "the league" and "women's rules" and were sort of entertaining at first, but quickly became annoying. So Jacque and I switched to playing three-man. Except we needed dice. So Austen and I walked over to some grocery store across the street. One of the funniest store trips. Austen guided me through the store like I was a small child and not the sober half of this two-some. But he bought the dice and the cough drops I so desperately needed to make it through the evening. Yay Austen!!
Then we went back to the apartment Jacque and I taught Austen how to play three-man. I mean, how to get schooled at three-man. He was already so far gone. For some reason he thought that drinking 100 proof mint-flavored inappropriate on the rocks was a really good idea. There was some Austen/Joe wrestling that was uncalled for, but all in all it was a successful party. We woke up late the next morning and headed back to Bedford. Good times. Then we rested up for Sunday night fun, because Erin came home and we went to see a movie. Then I had to go back to Dallas, because I had to go to work on Monday. Woot!

Kim's Birthday!
Okay, prior to the weekend of the 17-19 there was Thursday the 16th. I went to a basketball game and Kim's Birthday Extravaganza. Okay, we just went to Ben's, but ... shut up. We had fun, that's all that matters. Yay for karaoke. Kim's brother and I grilled her about her new "boyfriend" and then we judged him based on first impressions and decided he wasn't good enough for her. But what are you gonna do. She's having fun and that's all that matters. It's all a little blury. Have decided I am perhaps becoming an alcoholic. Some of you will laugh and say, of course you're not an alcoholic, you're just a social drinker. Others will laugh and say, of course you're an alcoholic, you've been one since that Houston trip your freshman year. Who can say whether one person is right and one person is wrong... Well, that was the sixteenth of December.

Hazy winter break, my old friend...
Last winter break was, well, let's just say I don't remember much. Jacque and I did more than, well, more than we should have. So this Thursday, the night after my last final, we began the partying. We went to Thursday night Karaoke at Ben's with our friend Kristen who is leaving for Denver. We had so much fun, it was a little ridiculous. We got home late and I was really tired all Friday.
I had work at 9am at that realty place, then I went to the bookstore for a few hours. Then home. I had enough time to try but not succeed in taking a nap and then I had to get ready for Kristen's official going away party. I made it to Bedford by 8:30 and Kristen answers the door and goes, would you like a Leg-Splitter? Well, sure!!
I should tell you that Thursday night, Byron told us the recipe for a very nice drink called a leg-splitter and told us to try it. Kristen made everybody one while we waited for everyone to get there. Instead of 4 parts of inappropriate and finishing it off with Pineapple juice, she made the drink with 4 shots of inappropriate and a lil' bit of pineapple juice. Not a super idea. For a first drink anyway. Maybe number 3 or 4 though. By the way, really good drink.
We went to PF Chang's for dinner and had champagne and then we each had a Pool Side. It's a delightful tropical like drink with a little umbrella. PS, it's green. Then we went back to Kristen's and drank some more. I had one drink that involved all clear liquids. I'm not sure what it was, but it was very sweet. I fell asleep on the couch around 1am, because we all know if yours truly is stationary for too long, she's out like a light. Then around 2:15 I was woken up and so I drove home. I was surprisingly awake. But my contacts were really dry, so that made things difficult.
Saturday I woke up too damn early. I went with Jason to go Christmas shopping. Jason finished all his Christmas shopping and I barely began. We wrapped presents and started to watch Kissing Jessica Stein. But my phone had been dead all day and I hadn't talked to anyone and I wasn't sure but I might have made plans to do something Saturday night, so I decided to use the last of my battery juice to call Jacque.
I called her and she told me that she had been trying to reach me, and that she asked my mother where I was. Why would she call my mother you ask? Well, she didn't, she called the condo and of course Lynn was there! I asked her where she was and she said she was on her way to Dallas with a car full of people and Kristen was almost to my place. But I'm not at my place!! Damn. So I had Jason haul ass to the condo to find Lynn still there, waiting for Steve to get back from his work Christmas party.
I looked like crap, I hadn't done any laundry and I know there is no excuse, so I had to improvise. The jeans closest to the top of the pile were the ones I wore to Ben's on Thursday. So I febreezed those bad boys and threw them in the dryer with a dryer sheet. Then I stormed up to my room to find a shirt to wear. With only a bright blue bra, the white t-shirts were out of the question. The only colored t-shirts that were clean were the free Mothman Prophecies shirt I got from the band hall junior year or the Sex Pistols shirt I bought for 70s night. Guess. Just guess. So I go downstairs and Lynn and Steve are talking to Kristen and they start making fun of the damn Sex Pistols shirt. And the scarf/belt that I absolutely adore that I used to wear to the Village, when we used to go to the Village. I won't apologize for that belt!
So Kristen and I meet the car full of people at Two Rows. I go to sit down on the end and Jacque shrieks, "No Devon, sit next to me!" That wasn't obvious. So she doesn't want Kristen sitting next to the random guy sitting at the other end of the table. Kinda cute. But random. Okay, this is Mike, Austen's friend from work. Then this other guy sits down across from me. So this is Sam, Mike's friend from high school. Okay. I still have my jacket on at this point and he brings up the fact that you can't smoke in Dallas restaurants. Well, duh! I know this! Where has home-fry been? Not in Dallas apparently.
Then I take off my jacket and he goes, You're wearing a Sex Pistols shirt and you're judging my smoking?
Well, yeah!
Thus began the most interesting and bizarre outing of my college life.
Sam likes to make bad jokes. Not dirty, just BAAAD.
Like, "I guess people in Dallas like to go on dates at the airport..."
What? - we all think.
Then Mike notices a sign for Love Field. Get it? Love Field. Dates at the airport.
Ha. ha. ha. ahem.
Funny right? No.
Once at Two Rows I had to revoke his speaking priviledges. So bizarre. We went discussed going to Pete's or Ben's after that. Jacque and Kristen and I wanted to go to Pete's. Austen wanted to go to Ben's. So we went to Ben's. Can I just warn you that Ben's on a Saturday night, sucks! It always has. It always will. We got there and it was sooo quiet. But did we leave? No.
We get into conversations about whether or not Amish people have social security cards and how bad hazing is. Nobody is arguing with him, but he seems to take offense to the idea that when freshmen tell bad jokes, we make them go to the head. We aren't hurting them. He doesn't know the circumstances, but starts in on how at the school he went to, they used to throw people in to partially frozen lakes. Well, not the same, and I wasn't condoning that, but please keep lecturing me on how bad hazing is. Please. The group discussed more diverse topics than I have ever heard on a Saturday night. It was way heavy man!
We finally got to leave Ben's...at 1:30am. Then we went back to the condo to talk some more. They finally left around 3am. Good-Ness.
PS, Colorado Bulldog - very pleasant drink. A white russian with coke.
Anything plus Coke = Nice.
Ha. ha. ha. ahem.

It's Hard Knock Life...
Man, journaling every day is hard. I just like making big updates to keep myself amused.
So this weekend Jacque, Austen (the guy), and I drove down to Austin (the city) for the release of Brian O'Neill's Special Edition DVD with everything he's done (read: we've ever been in) and lots of bonus features. Jacque tells Austen they will arrive at my place at 3:00pm and leave like, right after that. Well, Jacque and I know we're not leaving until 3:15 and I call her and tell her to push it to 3:30 because I'm always late and I didn't get everything done before I went to work. So when we actually do leave at 4:00pm, Austen is a little miffed. I haven't seen Austen really get mad over something stupid like that, just miffed.
Jacque and I have made it a tradition that I buy coke in glass bottles, she buys pop rocks, and we both get trashy magazines to read outloud during road trips. We stopped once on the way there and were so discouraged by the gas station with NO fun candy or beverages and NO magazines. Well, it's only 3 1/2 hours there, we mustn't get our panties in a twist. We listened to music and were there by 7:30pm. We go to Brian's first so we can drop off Austen for their little boys' night. The plan was for us to drop off Austen, then Jacque would drop me off at Ann's and she would go out with her friend Emily. So we go up, Brian and Jason Axe and Kristen have a really nice pad. Very swank. Kristen comes in and yells, "I got a job! $50,000!" This is very rude and inconsiderate - considering Jacque has graduated and is still looking for a job and considering the fact that we just don't like her. Then Brian offers us a tour, and Kristen apologizes for her messy room, citing that she didn't know anybody was coming down this weekend, or she would have cleaned. Brian and Jason had avoided the topic of the release with her, hoping that she wouldn't notice a party at their place all weekend long, but in fact, one month ago Kristen asked Austen flat out if he was going to Brian's thing. She knew people were going, she knew about it, she knew nobody was talking to her about it, so she wasn't invited and she knew that we ALL knew she knew and yet, our dysfunctional little group still played a little I-will-feign-ignorance-so-we-don't-have-a-massive-blowout-during-our-fun-time game. She's just another tiny kink in the the tricycle chain that is this trip.
So Jacque and I ditch Kristen and the boys and go to drop me off at Ann's. It is at this point that Jacque calls Emily to confirm that Emily does indeed have to baby-sit weird creepy buyer guy from New York who invited himself down for an unethical buyer/seller after hours hook-up. This is infact so unethical, that Julie and Emily will be fired if their company finds out this buyer came to visit them. So Jacque would stick with me. We meet Eric, the other person in Ann's life and I quickly discover that she probably loves him more because I forgot her birthday. If it's not on my calendar and I don't see you all the time, I'll FORGET!! I'M SORRY ANN!!! So we go out to dinner then back to their apartment. We spend an hour deciding that we won't go to sixth street, we'll stay in and play trivial pursuit. I shouldn't have to say who lost dreadfully to the freakishly smart quiet boy and his girl friend who play trivial pursuit all the time. Yeah, it was Jacque and me. But to be fair, the 20th Anniversary edition is HARD!
Eric left and we used the blow-up mattress that my grandmother gave me. A rude awakening at 2:00 in the morning - the mattress is not a full like the box says, it's a twin, so Jacque got the couch. The next day we went to brunch and decided to get my hair cut at the mall to kill time. [And can I just say, I love my hair cut. I know I shouldn't be obsessed with my hair, but I kind of am. In that I can't stand when it looks gross, which I think is most of the time, and I have to brush it all the time because my mother's voice is always in my head saying, "Devon, did you wash your hair? It looks all stringy." Yeah, I hear voices, what are you gonna do about it, punk?] Jacque called Emily and told her to bring weird creepy buyer guy to the mall, that way she wouldn't have to be alone with him. Apparently Emily's other seller friend Julie made out with him Friday night and today Julie was going to hang out with some guy so she dumped W.C.B.G. on Emily for a few hours.
But getting my hair cut on the day before Halloween was a treat. Small children were trick-or-treating at the mall and everybody had costumes. My hair dresser recommended taking weird creepy buyer guy to sixth street and then accidentally losing him. Heehee. I got out of the salon and Jacque introduces us and I meet Emily and W.C.B.G. and he goes, I love your hair cut it looks really good and won't let go of my hand. I forgot to mention that the picture he sent Emily and Julie is not what he looks like and he's thirty-something. These girls are 22-23. It's not right. Guhhh, I'm gettin chills just thinking about it. It was like watching a horror movie. When we were at Pottery Barn buying stuff (and by buying stuff, I mean Jacque bought six martini glasses and a shaker, PARTY!) Emily was at the counter and he comes up behind her and puts his hand on her shoulder and it was like I was watching The Ring all over again...I covered my eyes, squirmed, shook my hands at the screen (in their general direction), then realized where I was and that I could be seen so I had to turn and look somewhere else completely stunned, all the while thinking: "OH GOD! HE'S GOT HIS HAND ON HER SHOULDER AND IT JUST LOOKS SO WRONG. THE LOOK ON HER FACE! EWWW, AND ON HIS FACE! GET IT OFF, GET IT OFF, MOVE YOUR HAND WEIRD CREEPY BUYER GUY!!And then Emily took a large step back and he had to move his hand and I could un-tense and form words again. To Williams-Sonoma!
We were at the mall for about 2 hours, including the hour for my hair cut, so in that hour walking around the mall, I realized what it would be like for one of those internet hook-ups. Awkward and wrong. Side bar: we bought Cosmo and Lemon Drop mix and used most of it Saturday night just between Jacque and me. Don't judge. You haven't seen Brian's movies...or Jacque and me acting. Guhhhh...
Well, I'm going to vote. I'll write more later.

So begins an extra long one
When Kim called an asked if I wanted to go to Pete's on Thursday night I thought, well, I haven't been on a Thursday night before. I don't have any money and I'm kind of tired, but what the frick. We couldn't have paid anyone to go with us. Why is that? Pete's is a happening place? Just because they have "classes" and "a job" doesn't mean they can't start the weekend out right, on a Thursday. So we ended up at Ben's like we always do. It was me, Kim, Randy Ward, and Pat Gary. I don't know why I have to use their whole names. I even say their whole name when referring to them auditorally and when speaking to them. Oh well. Kim sang Waterfall by TLC and was the hit on by some guy in one of her classes.
He came up to the booth and was all, How you doin'?
And Kim was like, Fine.
And he was like, can I buy you a drink?
And she goes, sure Cosmopolitan.
Then I said I had to go to the bathroom and left her to be protected by Pat Gary and Randy Ward. Okay, next time, I'll just use their first names.
So when I came back he was in my spot and I tried to grab my drink and he was all, Hey wait a minute you're taking my drink and I was like, You're on crack, this is my drink.
Oh wait, I mean, you're drunk. So drunk. So funny.
Kim was like, Devon, I hate you for leaving me.
But then he was like, you pick a song out for us to do and come let me know and she goes, Yeah, sure.
No.
So then later he comes up and goes, I know you're not going to come over, so I'll just say good night.
And Kim goes, yeah. Night.
Nice. We did back up for Pat Gary on Love Shack and called it a night. That's good.
I worked all day Friday and then Jacque came to pick me up. We went back to my place and did absolutely nothing for 3 hours. Nice. Then we started organizing an exciting trip to the Cutting Edge, a haunted house in Ft. Worth. Jacque left to get a head start, Kim came over and then we caravan to Bedford. We left Kim's car at Jacque's parents' house and Austen met us there and I drove us all to the Ft. Worth. Good times all around. Not scary for me, but Kim and Jacque were screaming and Austen even jumped twice!! He's not so tough. So we got out of the foam room, tried to wipe off a bunch of foam and got in my car. After I turned the key in the ignition I heard a chainsaw near by. Jacque and Kim are in the back seat screaming, lock the doors, lock the doors. I didn't. I "forgot" how to. So the guy opened the door and put the chainsaw in the car and Jacque jumped into Kim's lap. Then he closed the door and left. It was funny. Except my car smelled like exhaust. So then we drove back to Jacque's house by way of Razoo's where we split a fishbowl and a crap load of water. I was just thirsty, that's all. Then I couldn't make it back to Dallas and I had to go to camp in the morning, so I stayed at my parents' house. A good end to a Friday night.
